Wearing white and Meredith's fashion faux pas

"Today" was on our tv yesterday morning while we were getting ready for work. It turns out Meredith Vieira did a fashion faux pas two days ago by wearing white pants before Memorial Day. She was inundated by e-mails pointing out her mistake.

Now, I was born and grew up in a tropical country. For the most part, we wear what we wear. At the slightest hint of rain, I remember we'd all be wearing sweaters and jackets. ESPECIALLY when it's typhoon season. Not because it's THAT cold, but because it rarely gets cold enough to wear sweaters and jackets. It was just fun to wear them. In fact, I believe people back in my country are frequently dressed quite well, even if it's just a trip to the mall. The mall is, after all, one of the places to see and be seen. Why would you wear a grubby outfit, if at all?

Which leads me now to the fashion faux pas I mentioned earlier. The first day of spring was March 20. Suddenly, my officemates were wearing cotton and gauzy tops, even if it was cold. I was still wearing a turtleneck. The calendar might say it's the first day of spring, but surely the weather wasn't spring-like. Had anyone pointed out that I was still wearing winter clothes, I would've been annoyed. Only because it seemed common sense to me that even if by all intents and purposes, it was spring already, I'll still dress up based on the day's weather.

I'm glad that I'm not a public figure. Poor Meredith. So many people called her attention for not following the seasonal fashion rules.
