When do you give up?

"I've tried and tried, but it's really seriously not working. I don't know what else to do."

When do you know when something's enough? When do you know that an effort is still worthwhile? When do you throw in the towel? When is it prudent to give up than to continue?

Some things are worth the hassle, but what if some things are simply not meant to be (hence the constant struggle)? What if the struggle is a sign that the people/situations/circumstances aren't really what you should be going after? When is giving up simply that, giving up? How far along should you go for something that it's still considered smart to go ahead and to go for broke?

Sometimes, it seems easier to just sit at the curbside and have a good cry. But maybe that's all you really need. A good cry. Maybe you're really not ready to give up. You just need time to sort out how you feel. And then you're ready to go on again.
