Passion and principles

Today, I suddenly realized how much I like writing. No, let me correct that, I LOVE writing. I love words and phrases. I enjoy stringing them together to make a coherent statement, which then leads to nice paragraphs and all that. And that's why I can no longer work as a writer. My passion for writing diminishes immensely when forced to spew out proposals, manuals, reports and all that. Now I like people who write about their principles - what they believe in, what they stand for, and what they'll fight for. It doesn't matter whether or not I agree with what they're saying.

But applying those two concepts in real life, I've always grounded my life on my principles ("it's the right thing and I ALWAYS do the right thing"), playing by the rules (every now and then, going nearly out of bounds). I've been following my passions wherever it led me, both career-wise and on the love front, while sticking to my principles. What I'm really aiming for is a fine balance between two - a principled passion or passionate principles. I don't know if I'm quite there yet. It's an ongoing journey.

Have you ever been caught between passion and principle? Forced to decide between the two? How did you handle it?
