"Are you happy today?"

"Are you happy today?"

I chatted with a friend the other night and asked that question. Just for the heck of it. Then I was asked the very same question. Happily and thankfully, we both answered yes. Which is always good. I like surrounding myself with positive people.

Admittedly, life isn't always throwing happy things our way, right? So it's really up to us to be happy. We can find reasons to be happy or we can just BE happy for no reason. Every single day. It goes hand-in-hand with living in thankful bliss - you find reasons to be thankful everyday. Once you realize what makes you thankful, then it makes you happy. Of course, it's not always easy. Things happen that can ruin your good mood.

In my case, there are days when I wake up all happy already. Perhaps I had a good and restful sleep. Or I had a fun dream. Other times, either one or even both of my household companions made me laugh early in the day. Even a fun phone conversation or an online chat can make me happy. It all depends, really.

Some days, I chat with friends who seem to be in a grumpy mood. I'll do my job as their friend to ask how they are, what's going on, and eventually, why they're grumpy. If their reasons are life-threatening or really super duper serious, then I'll listen. Of course. But if the grumpiness came from something stupid (like someone tried to cut them off on the road and got away with it, so now they're grrrr! about it), I'll listen and attempt for a verrry short time to make them laugh or get them out of that funk. Of course, I reserve these attempts for really good friends. If they refuse to snap out of it, then I'll end the chat pronto. Just because they're having a bad day doesn't mean I should have one too. Grumpy mood IS contagious, you know. But if they're willing to work with me, then all's well and good.

I try not to be the grumpy friend. I try not to be a Debbie Downer. If I can make you smile or laugh for even a short time without exerting serious effort on my part, then great! That'll make me happy too. Of course, you better not be a grumpy friend or a Debbie Downer as well. :D

Happiness, like most things, is really all in the mind. Just make sure you keep that in mind.
